ADA Hosts Food Safety Education Summit

As a board member of the Partnership for Food Safety Education, ADA hosted a stakeholder summit March 9 and 10 in Chicago designed to "develop an action plan reflecting our collective capacity to develop, execute and measure the effect of education and outreach strategies" to achieve food safety objectives of Healthy People 2020.

ADA/ConAgra Home Food Safety Program Supports Dietary Guidelines' Focus On Food Safety

Ensuring food is safe to eat is "a critical part of healthy eating," according to the newly released 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The American Dietetic Association and ConAgra Foods' public awareness campaign Home Food Safety supports the Dietary Guidelines' emphasis on the importance of food safety and the role each individual plays in keeping foodborne illness out of consumers' homes.

Wyoming Moves to Forefront on Licensure

The Wyoming Dietetic Association celebrated the passing of the state's Dietetics Licensure Act on March 3 when Gov. Matt Mead signed the legislation. After a two-year effort and many hours working with the state legislature, Wyoming has joined the ranks of states with licensure for dietitians.

Successful Advocacy for RDs in Hawaii

The Hawaii Dietetic Association submitted written testimony and HDA President Cyndy Kahalewale, MPH, RD, gave oral comments March 1 on Hawaii Senate Bill 657, relating to chiropractic scope of practice. HDA advocated for the removal of the term "clinical nutrition," which was not defined in the legislation, in favor of the more general term "nutrition." HDA's efforts were successful and the bill was modified as requested, thereby protecting the RD's scope of practice for medical nutrition therapy.

Report Outlines Food Insecurity in U.S.

The Food Research and Action Center recently released a report that suggests at least one in five Americans in 21 states struggle to feed their families. The state most likely to have families with food insecurity is Mississippi, followed by Alabama, Kentucky and South Carolina.

Individual and Family Correlates of Calcium-Rich Food Intake among Parents of Early Adolescent Children

Most adults do not meet calcium intake recommendations. Little is known about how individual and family factors, including parenting practices that influence early adolescents' intake of calcium-rich foods, affect calcium intake of parents. This information could inform the development of effective nutrition education programs.

Disaster Relief in Japan

Following the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Japan, food, nutrition, shelter and sanitation are especially urgent priorities. ADA has made a financial contribution to relief efforts through the American Red Cross, requesting that the Association's contribution be directed toward providing food and water supplies. ADA encourages individual members to consider making donations as well.
