The House of Representatives last week passed a two-week resolution to fund the federal government until March 18, at least temporarily avoiding a government shutdown. This temporary funding includes $4 billion in spending reductions and allows all government agencies and programs to continue operating at current levels of spending.

New Report on Americans and Food Hardship

The Food Research and Action Council (FRAC) released a report at a Congressional briefing that found nearly one in five Americans did not have enough money to buy food for their families in 2010. The report also found all Congressional districts reported food hardship. The comprehensive report includes state data and metropolitan areas as well.

New Ethics Opinion on Health Disparities

During the House of Delegates' Fall 2007 meeting, delegates conducted a dialogue on the topic of health disparities. The need for more ADA resources on this topic was identified. As a result, the Health Disparities Central Depository was created and the article "Ethics Opinion: Eliminating Dietetics-Related Inequalities" was published in the February Journal of the American Dietetic Association. The opinion is also available on ADA's website. Members are encouraged to both utilize and share these resources with other members.

ADA Members Develop New Food System Resource

"Cultivating Resilience: A Food System Blueprint That Advances the Health of Iowans, Farms and Communities" has been developed by ADA members Angela M. Tagtow, MS, RD, LD, and Susan L. Roberts, JD, MS, RD. This new resource on ways in which food systems support healthier people, communities, economies and the environment is useful for any member who wants to help build a healthy food system or is working on establishing a food policy council in their state or community.

Recognize Someone Special through the Foundation Tribute Gift Program

Today is Registered Dietitian Day, and the ADA Foundation encourages all members to honor a mentor or other special RD by making a tribute gift to the Foundation. Recognize those who made a difference in your life, while making an important investment in the future of the dietetics profession.
