Significant Cuts Proposed for Food and Nutrition Programs

Last week, the House Appropriations Committee released a continuing resolution funding the government after March 4. The proposed resolution cuts into all areas of Fiscal Year 2011 domestic spending, with many programs identified for elimination. This bill will affect programs in which ADA members work, as well as their clients.

President Obama released his proposed $3.7 trillion budget for Fiscal Year 2012 that includes spending cuts in many areas and increases in others. The budget plan aims to reduce deficits by $1.1 trillion over a decade while increasing spending for education and other areas.

Governors Express Concerns about Affordable Care Act

Twenty-one governors sent a letter last week to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, asking her to make "critical adjustments to the rules concerning state-run health-care exchanges or risk having the federal government assume full responsibility." A Florida court has ruled the health reform bill's individual mandate that people purchase health insurance is unconstitutional.

HHS Announces Prevention and Public Health Fund Investment

The Department of Health and Human Services announced $750 million in funding for prevention and public health. The funding created under the Affordable Care Act is part of the Prevention and Public Health Fund that encourages nutrition interventions.

Deadline Approaching: Call for FNCE 2011 Abstracts

The deadline to submit abstracts for ADA's 2011 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo is February 24. Original research and/or program project reports can be featured. Members can submit abstracts online for a poster or a research and practice innovation session (10-minute oral presentation). Complete instructions and the 2011 research and practice innovation categories can be found on page 1924 of the December 2010 Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Prevention Strategies for Childhood Obesity Online Certificate of Training Program

ADA and the ADA Foundation are encouraged by the level of attention being given to nutrition and physical activity from the White House and the First Lady's commitment to end childhood obesity within a generation. Presidents' Circle Award Nominations

Since 1983, ADA's Presidents' Circle Nutrition Education Award has recognized the development and dissemination of scientifically sound nutrition information that is unique in concept, creative in presentation, free from specific commercial message or endorsement and consistent with the mission, vision, values, positions and policies of ADA and its Foundation. ADA members are invited to nominate a company, association or government agency (national or international in scope) or an individual who has made a major contribution to the nutrition education of the public on a national or international basis. Nominations are due March 1.
