Healthy Eating Research Call for Proposals

Healthy Eating Research, a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is accepting proposals for grants that support research on environmental and policy strategies. Research proposals must offer strong potential to promote healthy eating among children to prevent childhood obesity, especially among low-income and racial and ethnic populations at highest risk.

The Community Food Security Coalition is accepting proposals for its upcoming conference Food Policy from Neighborhood to Nation. The conference will be May 19 to 21 in Portland, Ore. The proposal deadline is January 28.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition has released a Roadmap for Retailers: Safely Navigating What You Say About Dietary Supplements. The Roadmap is designed to remind the supplement industry about its responsibilities regarding laws and regulations under which supplements are sold.

USDA Updates Food Environment "Atlas"

Obesity is related to many environmental factors including access to markets and fast-food restaurants, income and poverty levels. These factors collectively define a county's "food environment," which can shed light on access to affordable health food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's updated Environment Food Atlas is available on the USDA Economic Research Service website.

FTC Orders BOOST Kid Essentials to Drop Probiotic Health Claim

The Federal Trade Commission has finalized an order that required a subsidiary of Nestle SA to drop allegedly deceptive claims suggesting that BOOST Kid Essentials prevents upper respiratory infections in children and protects against colds and flu, among other claims. Final ruling >>

FDA Withdraws Labeling Guidance

The Food and Drug Administration has withdrawn its draft guidance for the restaurant industry regarding the Menu Labeling Provisions of Section 4205 of the Affordable Care Act of 2010. The FDA announced it intends to complete the notice-and-rulemaking process after receiving comments on the draft guidance.

Teleseminar: Foodborne Outbreaks and Recalls

The safety of the food supply is a major public health issue on which registered dietitians can lead educational efforts about what is happening during a food recall. This knowledge is especially important for those who provide food at institutions and restaurants. A February 24 teleseminar will examine how foodborne illness outbreaks are tracked down and how recalls are implemented. Examples of standard operating procedures for food safety practices, especially with food recalls, will be provided.

On January 23, ADA's online Evidence Analysis Library passed its 10 millionth page view. The EAL synthesizes the best, most relevant nutritional research on important dietetics practice questions in an accessible, online, user-friendly library. It is a free benefit to all ADA members.

Committees Make a Difference, Shape Profession

Build personal and professional contacts, share skills with others and make a difference in dietetics - by serving on one of more than 20 ADA national committees comprised of volunteer leaders whose work influences the profession. The President-Elect and House of Delegates Speaker-Elect annually appoint volunteers to these important positions. To be considered, complete the Opportunities to Serve form by February 25.

Terminology Change Submission Being Accepted

ADA is accepting submissions for changes to the International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology (3rd ed.). The deadline for submissions is March 31.
