Informatics at FNCE 2011

“Be a  NIRD!  Nutrition Informatics RD”

A badge of honor!  This button was proudly worn at FNCE 2011 in San Diego, along with a second button including a QR code directing you to our on-line community (see link below) that said, “BMI – Bring More in! Nutrition Informatics Community.”

Nutrition Informatics activities at FNCE 2011 began with the in-person session for the nutrition-focused 10x10 introductory biomedical informatics course co-sponsored by ADA, AMIA, and OHSU. Twenty 10x10 students presented their individual class projects that highlighted an informatics-related solution to a workplace issue.  William Hersh, MD from OHSU wrapped up the day with a discussion of educational and career opportunities in informatics.  Stay tuned for announcements about another nutrition-focused 10x10 course offered in 2012 and culminating at FNCE in Philadelphia.

Sunday’s “Nutrition Informatics 5.0:  Open Discussion” brought a roomful of RDs and DTRs into this popular annual “open space” session to discuss nutrition informatics topics at the table of their choice.  Discussion topics included electronic health record implementation, social media, consumer informatics, research, registries, standards, and several others.  Attendees were invited to join the 800+ ADA members who are already part of ADA’s on-line Nutrition Informatics Community at http://adanic.webauthor.com.

On Tuesday, ADA’s Senior Manager – Nutrition Informatics, Lindsey Hoggle, joined nurse
informaticists, Joyce Sensmeier and Willa Fields, to present a panel session entitled, “Hot Topic: Information, Nutrition and Technology - The Top Ten Things to Know for 2012”.    The PowerPoint for this presentation is available at:  http://fnce.eatright.org/fnce/SessionDetails.aspx?SessionID=14153.

Besides these three events, there were dozens of other sessions related to informatics, reflecting ADA member interest in this area of practice and their desire to learn more about it.  To those of you who attended, it was great to see you and we look forward to
planning for FNCE 2012!
