Do "Ineligible Professionals" have a role in Health IT?

If you are reading this, you likely have seen the many references to "eligible professionals" or "EPs" --as designated by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. A recent report by Jennie Harvell of Health and Human Services takes a deep dive into the impact of "ineligible professionals" (those who do not qualify for HITECH financial incentive payments for EHR adoption).

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has been supportive of advocating for nutrition inclusion in health IT since HITECH began in February 2009. The Nutrition Informatics Committe (NIC) and the NIC Interoperability and Standards Sub-committee continue to work to develop nutrition related standards which are now a mandated component of EHRs. Getting nutrition "required" by the HITECH regulations is a critical part of keeping nutrition care as part of every team across all areas of care.

I have testified at the HITECH Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) Committees many times to keep nutrition in the discussion.  So obviously, I enjoyed reading the ineligible providers have nudged EHR adoption.  I think you will see that the report has an almost infinite amount of links to informative reports. The author has also been receptive to additional information on dietitians. I see this as a collaborative group effort to improve health care. Enjoy the read! http://aspe.hhs.gov/daltcp/reports/2013/ehrpi.shtml#ineligible
