All people have the right to request or refuse being fed as part of their medical treatment, and health care providers and consumers should know more about the legal and ethical issues of feeding, especially among people with dementia, coma or terminal illness, according to a newly updated position paper of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The paper emphasizes that registered dietitians, through their education and experience, know that the basis for ethical deliberation involving nutritional recommendations “includes understanding the cultural, social, psychological and spiritual needs of the individual.” Read more »
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is standing up in support of SNAP-Ed, the nutrition education program that accompanies the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, highlighting its positive impact on the health of low-income Americans. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has appointed four registered dietitian nutritionists to three-year terms as media spokespeople. The Academy's nationwide volunteer spokesperson network consists of 30 registered dietitians and registered dietitian nutritionists who conduct more than 3,000 nutrition and healthful eating interviews each year on behalf of the Academy with print, broadcast and online media. Registered dietitian nutritionist Glenna McCollum, vice president of health and nutrition for PhycoBiosciences, Inc., of Chandler, Ariz., began her one-year term June 1 as the 2013-2014 president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. With more than 75,000 members, the Academy is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. McCollum is the Academy's 88th president. She has served as president-elect since June 2012. Read more »
