This publication provides critical content updates for pediatric nutrition since the publication of the Pediatric Manual, 2nd Edition (June 2003). The updates include the most current recommendations from the Expert Committee on Child and Adolescent Overweight and Obesity, as well as the current dietary reference intakes from the Institute of Medicine.

Chapter 2: Nutrition Screening — UPDATED
- Revised to reflect new name and URL for the Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO).
- Reflects new DRIs, current US government view on whether women with HIV should breastfeed, breastfeeding guidelines for infants with PKU, updated safety guidelines for storage and handling of breastmilk in hospitals, new breastfeeding resources.

Chapter 19. Nutrition Management of Food Hypersensitivities — UPDATED
- Extensively revised to include latest on testing for food allergies, patient education, Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 regulations for food labels, new diets/food lists for specific allergens, updated resources.
- Current guidelines for lipid malabsorption and intake; new information on supplementation.
- New information on physical activity guidelines, weight management, and use of statins. Also, findings from studies on supplementation with antioxidants, plant sterols, nuts, soy, fish oil, folic acid in adults and pediatric patients.
- Updated information on metabolic disorders amenable to nutrition therapy; new resource lists for support groups, companies providing formulas and medical foods, up-to-date information on PKU.
- Extensively revised. Includes most current terminology, assessment guidelines, and treatment recommendations from ADA’s Evidence-based Pediatric Weight Management Nutrition Practice Guideline (2007) as well as the Expert Committee Recommendations on Child and Adolescent Overweight (2007) and Obesity and Institute of Medicine’s DRIs for Macronutrients (2005). - Includes tables for Recommended Intakes (RDA/AI) for Vitamins, Elements, and Macronutrients.
- Appendix has new title and extensive new content. The previous appendix included just the 1989 RDA recommended energy intakes; this revision also provides DRI equations for Estimated Energy Requirements (EER) and Total Energy Expenditure (TEE), plus Physical Activity Coefficients. Also new: World Health Organization and Schofield Equations for estimating Resting Energy Expenditures, and catch-up growth formulas for energy and protein.
