New York City Registered Dietitian Judith A. Gilbride Named 2006-07 President of American Dietetic Association

CHICAGO – Registered dietitian Judith A. Gilbride, professor and chair of the department of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University, begins her one-year term June 1 as the 2006-07 president of the American Dietetic Association.

Gilbride is the 81st president of ADA, the nation’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. She has served as ADA’s president-elect since June 2005.

During her term as ADA president, Gilbride said her plans include expanding educational and professional development opportunities for registered dietitians, particularly in such areas as genetics and its applications in nutrition research and practice.

Gilbride added: “ADA’s exceptionally qualified Board of Directors will work together to continue developing programs and initiatives that enhance the value of ADA membership. We will diligently support Association activities that expand coverage of nutrition services and raise reimbursement rates for registered dietitians. And we will collaborate with ADA’s House of Delegates, Commission on Dietetic Registration and Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education in determining the future course of dietetics education.”

Gilbride’s previous ADA leadership positions include speaker of the House of Delegates, chair of the Legislative and Public Policy Committee and member of the ADA Foundation Board. Gilbride has been a reviewer for the Journal of the American Dietetic Association since 1993 and received ADA’s Medallion Award for outstanding service to the dietetics profession in 1997. She was the Greater New York Dietetic Association’s Distinguished Dietitian in 1992.

An NYU faculty member for more than 20 years, Gilbride’s research interests include nutritional assessment, gerontology in community-based settings, clinical nutrition management, dietetics education and genetics education for nutrition and health professionals. Gilbride has edited the journal Topics in Clinical Nutrition for the past 14 years and has published more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
