CHICAGO – The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid food guidance system reflect current science and recommend what Americans should eat to stay healthy. The food and nutrition professionals of the American Dietetic Association are the experts in translating these recommendations into practical advice that consumers can use every day.
What is a “whole grain,” and how does it differ from any other kind? How big is a “two-ounce equivalent” of meat? How many carrots are in a cup?
“People often need help in figuring out what nutrition recommendations mean to them personally,” said registered dietitian and ADA spokesperson Ruth Frechman. “I help my clients use the Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid to set goals for themselves and their families.
“My clients often need a little encouragement when it comes to eating enough fruits and vegetables. I walk them through MyPyramid to help them visualize the 2 ½ cups of fruit and two cups of vegetables adults need each day,” Frechman said.
Registered dietitians are the experts when it comes to weight loss, eating disorders, disease prevention, menu planning, diabetes management, sports nutrition and a host of other food and nutrition-related issues. RDs specialize in helping anybody, in any walk of life, to:
- Take a personalized approach to dietary advice and weight management, because one size does not fit all.
- Eat a variety of foods from every group -- in balance and in moderation.
- Pay attention to calorie consumption.
- Understand how healthy eating and physical activity are both important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
