American Dietetic Association Presents 2004 Medallion Awards to Eight Outstanding ADA Members

CHICAGO - The American Dietetic Association will present its prestigious Medallion Award October 3 to eight ADA members in recognition of their outstanding service and leadership to ADA and the dietetics profession.

The winners will receive their awards during ADA’s Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Anaheim, Calif., which runs October 2-5. ADA Board members will present the Medallion Awards during the conference’s Honors Breakfast.

ADA’s Medallion Awards, given each year since 1976, honor individuals who have shown dedication to the high standards of the dietetics profession through active participation, leadership and devotion to serving others in dietetics and allied health fields.

Thousands of the nation’s top nutrition researchers, registered dietitians and other industry leaders will attend ADA’s Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo.

Cynthia Taft Bayerl, MS, RD, LDN, North Reading, Mass., director of perinatal and primary care nutrition services at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Bayerl’s areas of contributions to ADA include pediatric and maternal nutrition, legislative issues and public policy. Bayerl has served as president of the Massachusetts Dietetic Association, a member of the ADA House of Delegates and member or chair of groups including ADA’s political action and Association positions committees.

Judith L. Dodd, MS, RD, LDN, FADA, Gibsonia, Pa., adjunct assistant professor in the department of sports medicine and nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh and a supermarket industry consultant and advisor. Dodd’s many contributions to ADA include serving as president (1991-92), member of the Board of Directors, member and speaker of the House of Delegates, member and chair of many committees and task forces and president of the Pennsylvania Dietetic Association.

Beatriz Dykes, PhD, RD, LD, FADA, Monroe, Ohio, professor of dietetics technology and the founder and past-chair of the department of dietetics and nutritional management at Sinclair Community College. An advocate for diversity in the dietetics profession, her contributions to ADA include serving on the Nominating Committee and Council on Professional Issues and chair of ADA’s Diversity Committee. Dykes is president of the Filipino-American Dietetic Association networking group.

Molly Gee, MEd, RD, LD, Houston, Texas, project leader at Baylor College of Medicine for Look AHEAD, a government study examining the effects of weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes. Gee is also a nutrition and health communications consultant. Her contributions to ADA include serving as a media spokesperson, member of the Board of Directors and House of Delegates, Association treasurer and president and board member of the Texas Dietetic Association.

Barbara Ann F. Hughes, PhD, RD, LDN, FADA, Raleigh, N.C., president of a consulting firm whose clients include health-maintenance organizations, government agencies and individuals. Hughes previously worked as director and branch head of nutrition and dietary services at the North Carolina department of human resources. She has served on ADA’s Board of Directors, in the House of Delegates and on committees and task forces specializing in public health, public policy and legislation.
 
Charlotte M. Mosqueira, MA, RD, Fresno, Calif., director of nutrition and food services at Baptist Health Medical Center, Little Rock, Ark. Mosqueira has more than 30 years of experience in foodservice management and leadership. Her involvement with ADA includes serving as president of the Arkansas Dietetic Association, president-elect of the California Dietetic Association Foundation and member of the ADA House of Delegates Executive Committee.

Jody L. Vogelzang, PhD, MS, RD, LD, CD, FADA, Southlake, Texas, owner of a training and management consulting firm and adjunct instructor in nutrition at Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas. She is a former president of the Indiana and North Texas District dietetic associations and served in ADA’s House of Delegates. Vogelzang has served on ADA task forces including long-term care and managed care and has published articles on topics including end-of-life nutrition and care.

Madelyn L. Wheeler, MS, RD, CD, FADA, CDE, Zionsville, Ind., coordinator of research dietetics at the Indiana University Diabetes Prevention and Control Center. Wheeler has published dozens of research studies on nutrition management of diabetes and related topics. She created an electronic nutrition database used by ADA and the American Diabetes Association for more than 20 years. Wheeler previously received ADA distinguished service awards for her contributions to health professional education and clinical practice.
