CHICAGO -- Everyone wants his or her mother to live a long and healthy life. So on Mother's Day and throughout the year, the American Dietetic Association recommends giving mom the gift of good nutrition and health to let her know just how much you care about her.

"The gift of good nutrition can be given in many ways," said registered dietitian and ADA spokesperson Dawn Jackson. "Cook a healthy brunch or dinner and include lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains foods and lean protein. Make sure to include enough calcium, which moms need for bone strength. And after your meal, take a walk with your mother in a park or go to the zoo.

"A good book is also a great gift," said Jackson. "The American Dietetic Association has a good nutrition reading list to choose from. The books have all been reviewed by registered dietitians and cover a wide variety of topics including food facts, healthy eating for pregnant mothers, food sensitivities and allergies, better digestion, eating right when you have diabetes and healthy weight management."

Jackson's top suggestion: "Give your mom a gift certificate for a consultation with a registered dietitian, who can customize an eating plan suited to your mother. I can't think of a better way to say I love you."
