Six Registered Dietitians Named American Dietetic Association Media Spokespeople

CHICAGO -- The American Dietetic Association announces the appointment of six registered dietitians as news media spokespeople for the Association. Each spokesperson will serve a three-year term beginning June 1 and ending May 31, 2006.

ADA's nationwide volunteer spokesperson network consists of more than two dozen registered dietitians, from all parts of the country, who live and work in the country's largest media markets, conducting a total of more than 2,000 print, broadcast and electronic media interviews each year. ADA's new spokespeople are (listed alphabetically by city):

Atlanta: Rachel Brandeis, MS, RD, LD
Brandeis is the outpatient dietitian for cardiac preventive medicine services at Atlanta's Northside Hospital, where she provides medical nutrition therapy for patients with conditions such as insulin resistance, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), pregnancy, gastrointestinal disorders and high cholesterol. Her areas of expertise include childhood obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular nutrition.

Baltimore: Noralyn Wilson, RD, LD
Wilson is senior manager at Sodexho Health Care Services, where she supports clinical nutrition services in dozens of acute-care hospitals, acting as a resource for fellow registered dietitians, foodservice managers and hospital administrators. Wilson is also adjunct professor at Prince George's Community College. Her areas of expertise include weight management and obesity, diabetes, African-American nutrition, dietary guidelines and cardiovascular nutrition.

Dallas: Lona Sandon, MEd, RD, LD
Sandon is an assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where her responsibilities include recruitment and admission of students; developing Web-based course materials such as the university's online medical terminology class; classroom instruction and outpatient nutrition counseling and services. Sandon develops and maintains a number of the university's departmental and individual course Web sites. Her areas of expertise include sports nutrition, disease prevention, weight management and obesity, women's nutritional concerns and education technology.

Houston: Roberta Anding, MS, RD, LD, CDE
Anding is the clinical dietitian in the adolescent/sports medicine section at Baylor College of Medicine and nutrition consultant for the Houston Texans professional football team. She is also an instructor in the department of kinesiology at Rice University where she teaches and provides nutrition counseling to student athletes. Her areas of expertise include eating disorders, obesity, sports nutrition, diabetes and vitamins and supplements.

Miami: Lisa Dorfman, MS, RD, LMHC
Dorfman is president of a nutrition consulting business, providing guidance on food, physical and mental health issues to clients including individuals, schools, medical institutions, spas, health centers and corporations. She is a licensed psychotherapist, certified coach and competitive athlete. Dorfman's areas of expertise include sports nutrition, stress, recipe development, eating disorders and nutritional psychotherapy.

St. Louis: Marilyn Tanner, MHS, RD, LD
Tanner is a clinical pediatric dietitian at St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. She is the study coordinator of an international investigation of nutritional prevention of type 1-diabetes, which is being conducted at the university's Patient Oriented Research Unit. Tanner teaches dietetic interns and speaks frequently to groups including parents, physicians and other health professionals on children's nutrition and obesity-related issues. Her areas of expertise include children's nutrition, diabetes, hypertension and renal nutrition.

In addition, Jeff Hampl, PhD, RD, has been reappointed to a three-year term as an ADA spokesperson based in Phoenix. Hampl, an ADA spokesperson since 2000, is an associate professor of community nutrition at Arizona State University and a nutrition consultant at the Tempe Family YMCA. His areas of expertise include maternal and prenatal nutrition, low-fat and very low-calorie diets, children's nutrition and food assistance programs.
