Tucson Resident Named National Spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association

Spokesperson to be Association's Phytochemical/Functional Food Expert

CHICAGO, July 21, 1997

Tucson, Ariz., resident Cyndi Thomson, R.D. (registered dietitian), has been selected as a national media spokesperson for The American Dietetic Association (ADA), the nation's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.

Thomson joins a nationwide network of 28 spokespeople that communicate the importance of sound nutrition to the public on behalf of the nearly 70,000 member association. While her primary role will be the association's expert on phytochemicals/ functional foods, Thomson will speak on behalf of ADA's campaigns and initiatives.

Thomson is clinical nutrition research specialist at the University of Arizona's Prevention Center and, in October, will begin working with the Arizona Cancer Center, both in Tucson. She is a certified nutrition support dietitian by the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

An ADA member since 1979, Thomson is chair of the nominating committee for ADA's Nutrition Educators of Health Care Professionals dietetic practice group and a past member of ADA's house of delegates (governing body). Other professional affiliations include the American Society for Clinical Nutrition and International Group on Nutritional Diagnosis.

Thomson is currently a doctoral candidate in nutritional sciences at the University of Arizona, Tucson, where she earned her master's of science degree in dietetics. She is completing research related to nutrition, cancer and immune function. Thomson earned her bachelor's of science degree in family and consumer resources/dietetics from West Virginia University, Morgantown.

The American Dietetic Association serves the public by promoting optimal nutrition, health and well-being. With its headquarters in Chicago, ADA began its media spokesperson program in 1982.
