CHICAGO -- Jane White, PhD, RD, LDN national leader in the fields of clinical nutrition and medical education will become the 75th president of the American Dietetic Association June 1.

With more than 70,000 members, ADA is the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. White will serve as president until May 31, 2001. She has been the ADA's president-elect for the past year.

White, a native of New Orleans, La., completed her undergraduate degree at St. Mary's Dominican College, dietetic internship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and doctoral degree at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. White is a tenured professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Tennessee and holds joint appointments in the Graduate School of Medicine-Knoxville and the College of Medicine-Memphis. She is the author of numerous publications, audio-and video tapes.

An ADA member since 1969, White has previously served as Speaker of the ADA House of Delegates, and has held numerous elected and appointed positions within ADA at the national, state and district levels. She is the ADA liaison to the American Academy of Family Physicians and is the AAFP representative to the Technical Review Committee of the Nutrition Screening Initiative. She was instrumental in the development of the NSI's "Determine Your Nutritional Health Checklist," used nationally to screen the nutritional health of older Americans. White is Chair of the ADA Physician Nutrition Education Project, which trains dietetics professionals in the nutrition education of primary care physicians. White is a recipient of the 1996 ADA Medallion Award and several ADA outstanding Service awards. She was the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Outstanding Alumni in 1994 and was recognized as a Centennial Leader by the UT College of Human Ecology.

White is married and is the mother of two children. She is an Assistant Scout Master of Troop 444, Great Smoky Mountain Council BSA and holds the Brotherhood rank in the Order of the Arrow, the honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. She is a 1999 recipient of the GSMC Toqua District Award of Merit. Her most recent undertaking, together with Ken Bielak, MD Director of the Department of Family Medicine's Sports Medicine Fellowship, is the development of an Adolescent Health/Health Education Elective for family practice residents at the GSMC's Camp Buck Toms. This means that second and third year family practice residents, licensed physicians, will provide medical care for Boy Scouts attending Summer Camp. A telemedicine link to the UT Medical Center facilitates consultation with Family Practice Faculty and medical center staff in the delivery of health care to this unique population.
