The American Dietetic Association Launches New Sports Nutrition Guide for Professionals

CHICAGO -- May 12, 2000 -- The long awaited book, Sports Nutrition, A Guide for the Professional Working with Active People, was recently published for the American Dietetic Association.

Edited by Christine A. Rosenbloom, PhD, RD and spokesperson for the ADA, the new 759-page book is an essential reference for food, nutrition, and health professionals who work in sports. It compiles all the latest recommendations for sports, ranging from football, basketball and hockey to cycling, skiing, and swimming into one practical, comprehensive resource.

This new book provides information on nutrient and fluid needs, nutrition throughout the life span, macronutrient requirements, working with special populations, and guidelines for evaluating sports nutrition on the Internet, which was reviewed by ADA's Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionist group, (SCAN). "We've assembled a real dream-team of national experts -- many of whom are participants in sports, said Rosenbloom. It is a real user-friendly information book on sports nutrition for health and fitness professionals."

Rosenbloom adds, "Nutrition can be the most overlooked aspect related to sports performance said Rosenbloom. Too many athletes fuel their bodies with cheap gas and fail to adequately replace fluids. I hope all avid sports enthusiasts will become more aware of the nutrition they need in order to compete at every level."

Sports Nutrition, A Guide for the Professional Working with Active People, is $54.95 for non-members and $46.95 for ADA members. It can be purchased by contacting the American Dietetic Association, 800-877-1600 ext. 5000 or the Web site, www.eatright.org.
