The American Dietetic Association's new book, Eating Disorders: A Clinical Guide to Counseling and Treatment, written by registered dietitian Monika M. Woolsey provides health professionals with an in-depth look at the nervous system and hormonal influences on nutrition and feeding.
The book addresses the biological, psychological and social aspects of eating disorders. It also offers a model that can be used to diagnose and classify mental disorders and nutritional treatment plans.
"The focus is on nutrition and the brain, demonstrating how the mind and body are intricately connected," said Woolsey. "Since there are many types of eating disorders that affect millions of people, this book aims to help the health professional better understand the underlying influences associated with eating disorders of every kind and offers guidance for treatment."
Woolsey, an internationally recognized specialist in eating disorders treatment, is an exercise physiologist with a bachelor's degree in nutrition from Cornell University and a master's degree in kinesiology from University of Colorado, Boulder. Woolsey has counseled more than 1,500 eating disordered clients in both inpatient and outpatient settings and has worked in eating disorder treatment centers providing counseling and developing nutrition protocols.
