The American Dietetic Association Grants Honorary Membership to Two Medical Researchers/ Practitioners
The American Dietetic Association (ADA), the nation's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, bestowed honorary membership on K. Michael Hambidge, M.D. and Steven B. Heymsfield, M.D. for their significant contributions to the field of dietetics through their research and clinical practices.

Dr. Heymsfield is deputy director of the Obesity Research Center of St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital and professor of medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, both in New York City. Noted for his research in the area of body composition, obesity and enteral nutrition, Dr. Heymsfield has authored and/or co-authored with registered dietitians more than 200 scientific publications. He has held leadership roles in the American Society of Clinical Nutrition and the North American Association for the Study of Obesity. Recently, he was elected president of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Dr. Heymsfield obtained his medical degree from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
Dr. Hambidge is professor of pediatrics and director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Science Center, Denver, Colo. He established the Center for Human Nutrition in 1988, providing an interdisciplinary program to help promote nutrition research and education among physicians and dietitians. His research on zinc and other trace elements won him international recognition, and he has co-authored 40 scientific papers on nutrition related topics with registered dietitians.
Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Hambidge serves as a member of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences and treasurer of the American Society of Clinical Nutrition. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Cambridge in England.
Each year, ADA grants honorary membership to researchers and medical practitioners for their long-standing recognition and continued support of dietetics professionals as key members of the healthcare team, and for their outstanding research in nutrition and its application in clinical medicine. Since 1954, ADA has given honorary membership to 40 scientists and medical professionals.
