CHICAGO -- Registered dietitian Janet Helm, a resident of Chicago, has been named a media spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, the nation's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.

Helm joins ADA's national, volunteer network of 29 experts who communicate the importance of sound nutrition to the public. Headquartered in Chicago, the 70,000-member ADA serves the public by promoting optimal health, nutrition and well-being. Its media spokesperson program began in 1982.

During her three-year term as an ADA spokesperson, Helm will provide expert commentary for print and broadcast news stories on health and nutrition topics, as well as ADA's official positions, educational campaigns and public policy initiatives.

Helm specializes in translating nutrition science research into consumer-friendly nutrition advice. Her areas of expertise include food trends, evaluating fad diets, women's health, the food service industry, culinary demonstrations, functional foods and biotechnology.

Helm received her bachelor's degree in mass communications and home economics/nutrition and her master's degree in dietetics from Kansas State University.

Helm is managing director of food and nutrition at BSMG Worldwide, Chicago, providing strategic counsel to food companies, commodity groups and industry organizations. She frequently speaks to professional and consumer groups. Helm has written for Cooking Light and First for Women magazines and has written consumer education brochures and recipe booklets.
