American Dietetic Association Announces Appointment of Media Spokespeople

The American Dietetic Association announces the appointment of five dietetics professionals as news media spokespeople for the Association, representing the Boston, Chicago, Houston, Seattle and Tampa markets. They join spokespeople - all registered dietitians - in ADA’s nationwide network of volunteer media sources, located in the nation’s top 25 markets.

The new spokespeople are:

Boston: Heidi Reichenberger, MS, RD

Reichenberger is a nutrition consultant and writer who counsels patients at Charles River Hospital and Boston Medical Center. Previously she was a clinical and outpatient dietitian and head of the nutrition department at the Groton, Conn., Naval Hospital. Reichenberger is the public relations chair of the Massachusetts Dietetic Association. She received the navy's Meritorious Civilian Service Medal in 1996 and ADA's 2001 Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award.

Chicago: David Grotto, RD

Grotto is director of nutrition education at Block Medical Center in Evanston, Ill., where he counsels patients, develops education materials, and conducts cooking and other educational classes. Grotto is host and co-producer of two weekly Chicago-area radio talk shows, "Natural Grocer" and "Let’s Talk Health, Chicago! Previously, Grotto was supervisor of the weight management center at St. Francis Hospital and Health Center in Blue Island, Ill., and manager and owner of a Chicago-area health food business. He has also worked in private practice.

Houston: Joan Carter, MBA, RD

Carter is an instructor in the department of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Internet communications manager for Baylor’s Children’s Nutrition Research Center. She is responsible for Web site development, strategic planning, writing and content management. Previously, Carter worked in the College of Medicine’s Office of Public Affairs, handling media relations and publications for departments including the Human Genome Sequencing Center. Carter has also worked as a freelance writer, foodservice director and a cordon bleu European-trained chef.

Seattle: Lola O’Rourke, MS, RD

O’Rourke is a nutrition marketing consultant, specializing in creating publications for physicians, developing training seminars and speaking to the public. Previously, O’Rourke was manager of nutrition communications for Kellogg Latin America, based in Mexico, and manager of worldwide nutrition communications for Kellogg Co. Her experience also includes working as nutrition program planner for the Cook County Department of Public Health, in Chicago.

Tampa: Cynthia Sass, MA, RD

Sass is senior dietitian and adjunct instructor at the University of South Florida, where she provides nutrition counseling to students; develops educational campaigns; works with USF athletic teams; speaks to the public on wellness, weight management and other nutrition topics; and lectures to classes in the university's departments of wellness, women’s studies and anthropology. Sass is a former staff dietitian at hospitals and universities in Texas and New York and is a certified personal trainer.
