American Dietetic Association Co-Hosts XIV International Congress of Dietetics

CHICAGO - Thousands of food and nutrition practitioners, educators, researchers and policy makers from more than 30 countries will examine such global health issues as food safety and security, the epidemic of obesity and community approaches to health at the XIV International Congress of Dietetics, to be held May 28-31 in Chicago.

The Congress is co-hosted by the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada. It is the first International Congress of Dietetics to be held in North America in 20 years.

“As food and nutrition issues increasingly take on global dimensions, dietetics professionals must share expertise, opportunities and successes in meeting worldwide challenges,” said registered dietitian and ADA President Marianne Smith Edge.

All ICD sessions will be held at Navy Pier, 600 East Grand Avenue. Topics will include:

  • Poverty, Food Insecurity and Obesity: A Paradox
  • The Epidemic of Childhood Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes: Current Research and Treatment Strategies
  • The Nutrition Component of Substance Abuse Programs
  • School Nutrition Policies in Canada
  • International Initiatives in Managing Adult Obesity
  • Can Biotechnology Feed the World? Biotechnology and Food Security in Developing Countries
  • Nutrition Security in HIV/AIDS: Global Challenges for Dietitians
  • Communicating Healthy Eating to Children
  • Dietetic Perspectives on Nutrition Policy
  • How Food Choices and Trade Policy Affect Health and Global Food Security
  • International Approaches to School Feeding Programs
  • The Pros and Cons of the Glycemic Index
  • Women: The Key to Food Security

XIV International Congress of Dietetics
The theme of the Congress is Sharing Global Perspectives-Building Our Common Ground. The program centers around five areas addressing the global scope of dietetics practice:

  1. Building healthy communities
  2. Food security: ensuring safe, healthy and appropriate food for all
  3. Issues in the dietetics profession
  4. Food administration management
  5. Nutrition strategies for new epidemics.
