What related experience and skills have you obtained to prepare you to be an ADA leader?
I’ve gained valuable leadership experience from holding positions in the ADA and my district and affiliate associations. My focus has aimed to be diversified in these positions in order to enhance my ability to become a better facilitator of action. There are many attributes that I can bring to this position. Some of which are experience to communicate effectively, passion to motivate others, and a new face to create fresh ideas to the HOD members.
What do you perceive as an important issue impacting the dietetics profession today?
The most important issue facing our profession to me is the need to promote the RD/DTRs as the best sources of nutrition information available in the community. On a daily basis, I help motivate colleagues and students alike, to promote themselves as well as the profession to move toward this message. I also feel it’s vital for the growth of our profession for seasoned RDs and dietetic leaders to effectively reach out to dietetic students.
How would you encourage and promote diversity if elected? I believe that I’m already contributing to the diversity of the dietetics profession by holding the office of president in the National Organization of Men in Nutrition (NOMIN) networking group. If elected to the HOD, I would continue to promote dietetics as a career choice to men as well as a variety of ethnic groups. In addition, I would like to promote more non-traditional work options to dietetics professionals to create a more diverse workforce.
