What related experience and skills have you obtained to prepare you to be an ADA leader?
Leadership, public speaking, policy development and grant writing skills were expanded through active participation in national, state, and local initiatives including conference presentations, testimony at governmental hearings (USDA Healthier US Forums, State Confirmation Hearings), nutrition policy and strategic planning documents (Wisconsin State Health Plan’s Adequate and Appropriate Nutrition Section, Wisconsin Diabetes Control and Prevention Program Strategic Plan and Performance Improvement Plan); and writing nutrition grants (Church Based Health and Wellness Program, 3-year funding granted)
What do you perceive as an important issue impacting the dietetics profession today?
Maintaining our credibility as the "Nutrition Experts" given that many others are providing nutrition advice to the public, especially considering the high visibility that the media is providing on concerns related to the childhood obesity epidemic, weight loss diets, complimentary and alternative nutritional products/therapies, and chronic disease prevention strategies.
How would you encourage and promote diversity if elected? I would encourage all DPGs and State Affiliates to connect with the ADA Networking Groups (i.e. NOBIDAN, MIN) to work to increase their membership diversity as well as utilization of the Diversity Tool Box for recruitment and retention planning. As an African American dietetic professional, I would serve as a role model and encourage others who want to advance to leadership roles within ADA.
