3-A-DAY OF DAIRY CAMPAIGN

Information about Dairy Foods

According to USDA, only 19 percent of Americans meet the Dietary Guidelines recommendation of three servings of dairy per day. That is why the National Dairy Council and the American Dietetic Association have teamed up to educate consumers about the nutrition and health benefits of dairy foods such as fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.

In support of the 3-A-Day of Dairy Campaign, the ADA along with the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics and National Medical Association will help educate over 240,000 health professionals nationwide about the nutrition and health benefits of milk, cheese and yogurt. Health professional leaders from these organizations serve as an advisory panel for the 3-A-Day of Dairy program.

The ADA believes the 3-A-Day of Dairy Campaign can help consumers establish positive eating behaviors. Eating three servings of low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese or yogurt is an easy way for Americans to get the recommended amounts of calcium and other essential nutrients they need. For those who are lactose intolerant, lactose-free and lower-lactose products are available. These include lactose-free milk, hard cheeses and yogurt. Milk and other dairy products are good sources of calcium, naturally offering the most calcium per servings. Other sources of calcium include tofu, beans, some green leafy vegetables and calcium-fortified juices.
