Biotechnology and the Label

You've heard of biotechnology, designer foods and functional foods, do you know what it all means?

Biotechnology is a process that enhances taste, flavor and nutritional value of foods. The process does not change the composition of the food very much, so special labeling is not required. Bioengineered foods must follow the standard food labeling regulations.

If a food might cause an allergic reaction, the label will carry that note. When nutritional content is changed this must also be noted.

Designer foods are still to be approved, but would offer increased nutritional values, nutrition in foods that naturally lack that nutrition and possibly help reduce disease risk.

Biotechnology currently allows for broccoflower and tomatoes that ripen on the vine, but don't spoil in transport.
