Sorting Out the Facts on Insulin Resistance

April 6, 2004

Some popular weight-loss diets base their recommendations on the concept of insulin resistance. What is the story on insulin resistance, and does it really play a part in weight management?

Insulin resistance refers to the body’s inability to respond properly to the action of insulin, the hormone that helps the body use blood sugar, also known as blood glucose. Insulin resistance causes blood sugar levels to stay elevated by preventing glucose from entering the body’s cells to be used as a source of energy.

Insulin resistance must be diagnosed by a physician using appropriate tests. Some people have a genetic predisposition to developing insulin resistance. Other factors include physical inactivity and obesity.

The best way to help lower your risk for insulin resistance is a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a low-fat eating plan and a healthy weight.
