ADA Co-Hosts Landmark International Dietetics Conference

June 1, 2004

Thousands of food and nutrition practitioners, educators, researchers and policy makers from more than 30 countries came to Chicago this past weekend to closely examine such global health issues as food safety and security, the epidemic of obesity and community approaches to health. The occasion was the XIV International Congress of Dietetics, held every four years.

The ICD was co-hosted by the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada and was the first International Congress of Dietetics to be held in North America in 20 years.

Renowned speakers from all over the world presented research outcomes, tips for community programs and perspectives on a variety of topics. Key topics included:

  • School food service programs in Japan, Sweden and the United States
  • Coping with eating disorders in Brazil
  • The growing international epidemic of Type 2 diabetes
  • The role of biotechnology and food availability throughout the world
  • The importance of food safety in a changing environment.

Food and nutrition issues continue to take on global dimensions. There is a continued need for international cooperation to address problems like obesity, food security, chronic diseases and other food and nutrition issues.
