Nutrition Care Process/ Standardized Language Committee Report Spring 2006

The Board of Directors began exploring Nutrition Diagnosis terminology in 2002. A task force was appointed to explore the potential use of Dr. Mary Ann Kight’s coding system. They concluded that it would be more appropriate for ADA to develop our own system.

The Board of Directors accepted the task force’s recommendation and appointed the Standardized Language Task force in summer 2003 with the charge to complete the initial work of identifying standardized language for nutrition diagnoses and nutrition interventions.

The Board of Directors approve the combining of the Nutrition Care Process and Standardized Language Task Forces into one standing committee and this group was appointed starting June 2005. The policy/procedures were approved by the Board of Directors.

PNND members were notified.

Research planning meeting was held to address two phases of Nutrition Diagnostic research

Determined goal to publish nutrition diagnosis cases in the Journal within the next year

Reviewed work of educational task force for implications for NCP/SL

July 2005

NCP/SL meeting held.

Finalized International Meeting Agenda.

Reviewed survey of educators and needs for implementation of NCP.

Finished Communication Plans for four key audiences (Practitioners, Clinical Nutrition Managers, Educators, and External Audiences).

Reviewed articles to be submitted to the Journal during next year.

Reviewed questions to assess level of implementation of the Nutrition. Care Process that were incorporated into the Dietetics Measure.

Began drafting diagnostic statements in PES (problem, etiology and signs & symptoms) format to be included in the Nutrition Care Manual.

Determined domains for Nutrition Intervention Terms: Food and Nutrient Delivery, Education, Counseling, and Referral/ Coordination, and template for intervention reference sheets.

Reviewed research proposal and provided input to Dr Enrione.

International Meeting held with representatives from five countries and WHO.

Update communication plan for Nutrition Care Process and Standardized Language

Article summarizing experience in the Virginia Hospital and California VA was published in the Journal.

A Pre-FNCE CNM workshop offered and attended by 67 people. Work book assembled for workshop.

Two FNCE sessions highlighted NCP and Nutrition Diagnoses with record attendance.

Nutrition Diagnosis: A Critical Step in the Nutrition Care Process was released as a new publication at FNCE. Sold out before FNCE started. Highest selling book at FNCE.

November 2005

Evaluated initial data collection from CARLE.

Initial Webinars provided to 17 PNND members.

Program proposal for FNCE for Hawaii was submitted to highlight PNND.

Reviewed marketing plan for Nutrition Diagnosis book.

Created format for tracking presentations on Nutrition Care Process and Nutrition Diagnosis by Committee members.

December 2005

NCP/SL meeting held.

Reviewed on-line course from Pam Charney’s research to identify how to adapt as CEUs for members on Nutrition Diagnosis.

Use Pam Charney’s research to update existing Nutrition Diagnostic terms.

Continued development of nutrition intervention terminology definitions and reference pages.

Nutrition Infomatics article by Hoggle published in the Journal.

Second Webinars provided for PNND members.

Approved a working group to address the strategic positioning of ADA on nutrition and standardized language infomatics.

January 2006

Completed external review of nutrition intervention terminology definitions and reference sheets.

Notified of acceptance of abstract on nutrition terminology completed by Dr Jenkins (Consultant) for presentation at Korean nursing infomatics meeting.

Only 281 copies of Nutrition Diagnosis publication in stock, re-print order has been submitted.

Minor changes made to Nutrition Intervention Terminology based on input from committee and consultants.

Created new matrix showing how to use nutrition assessment data to identify potential nutrition diagnosis.

Created new section with two cases showing how the terms were incorporated into various type of medical record documentation for the 2007 edition of publication to be released at FNCE in Hawaii.

March 2006

Dr Enrione submitted paper to JADA focusing on what is Nutrition Diagnosis.

Received new shipment of 2006 edition of Nutrition Diagnosis books.

Trained Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina (BCBSNC) research participants on Nutrition Diagnosis and intervention terminology.

Incorporated both nutrition diagnostic and intervention terms into MNT Assistant for data collection for the BCBSNC research project.

Conducted sessions at DEP meetings.

April 2006

Coordinated internal review of the 2007 publication: Nutrition Diagnoses and Nutrition Interventions: Standardized Language for the Nutrition Care Process by CADE, CDR, and Scope of Practice and QM Committee.

Submitted the 2007 publication: Nutrition Diagnoses and Nutrition Interventions: Standardized Language for the Nutrition Care Process for printing and availability at FNCE 2006.

Provided copies of 2006 version of Nutrition Diagnosis book to CDR test writers.

Reviewed Educators communication plan and identified further action steps.

PNND webinar scheduled.

Discussed Wave 2 activities for PNND.

Submit second article on electronic medical records for publication (Lindsay Hoggle).

Begin to conduct focus groups on use of interventions by acute care, long term care, and community/ambulatory care dietitians to discuss intervention terms.

Schedule follow-up call for International participants.

Post new downloadable version of Nutrition Diagnosis book.

Next Fiscal Year

Finish conducting focus groups on use of interventions by acute care, long term care, and community/ambulatory care dietitians to discuss intervention terms.

Pilot test web-training for nutrition diagnosis (developed by Pam Charney) and determine marketing plan.

Review results from survey on all 65 nutrition diagnostic terms (Dr Enrione’s study).

Conduct FNCE session highlighting PNND successes.

Review preliminary results from Dietetics Practice-Based Research Network study.

Discuss how to develop list of synonyms for nutritional diagnostic labels.
