Quality Management Committee Spring 2006 Report
The Quality Management Committee provides direction for monitoring, developing, approving, evaluating and maintaining quality management in the practice of dietetics in collaboration with various groups (i.e., external organizations/agencies and ADA organizational units).
The following represent the Committee’s key activities since September 2005:
Meetings:
The Quality Management Committee met via teleconference in November, December, January and March; in person at the October 2005 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in St. Louis; and again in person in February at the Committee’s Face to Face meeting in Chicago.
Activities and Accomplishments: 2005/2006 Program of Work:
- HOD Spring 2006 Workshop: A joint presentation with the Evidence-based Committee is scheduled and presentation development is underway.
- Showcase QM Projects: Two ADA members were acknowledged for winning JCAHO Codman and Eisenberg Awards ~ Acknowledgement occurred in blast e-mails; CEO Digest; the Journal’s People and Events section; CNM newsletter and PPW Quality Management booth. Acknowledgement was accompanied by award application information and encouragement for others to apply.
- Pursue NQF Membership: NQF was researched and justification for request for NQF membership was submitted with Quality Management’s 2006 to 2007 budget request.
- SOP/SOPP Promotion to DPGs: SOP/SOPP project options were presented at FNCE 2006 DPG officers’ meeting and via the DPG officers’ electronic mailing list.
- Leader in Quality Speaker for FNCE 2007: A speaker has been identified and options for covering the honorarium are being pursued as well as the optimal forum for this speaker at FNCE.
- Pursue URAC accreditation for ADA Web site: Item to be deferred to next year.
- Educate Members regarding PSET: Item to be deferred to next year.
- Assess Culture of Safety: The logistics of conducting the AHRQ/Premier Patient Safety Survey Tool “Culture of Safety” have been discussed; actual implementation of the survey may be deferred to next year.
- JCAHO Food Safety Quality Initiative: Item to be deferred to next year.
- Increase resources on HACCP: Item to be deferred to next year.
- Educate Members regarding Satisfaction and QOL Tools: Discussion regarding the importance of validating the NQOL tool and logistics of completing this task has been discussed; however, this item may be deferred to next year.
- Knowledge about Quality Management Gap Analyses: The logistics of conducting the gap analysis to determine the needs of clinical nutrition mangers in order to implement successful quality management measurement projects has been discussed and the implementation of the project may be deferred to next year.
- JCAHO/Health Literacy: An information sheet is in development.
- JCAHO 24 Hour Screen: Several member-driven initiatives are in progress. QM has requested information from JCAHO regarding interpretation of this standard and compliance data. QM will work to ensure that members have access, in one place, to information about all the initiatives and tools/resources that we are aware of.
- Transitioned to new ADA Quality Management Staff Partner.
- Presented: “PLEASE! Make it Easy to use MNT Guidelines and Other NCP Tools” at FNCE 2005 in St. Louis, Missouri.
- Reviewed and approved: SOP and SOPP for RDs in Behavioral Health.
- Reviewed and approved: SOP and SOPP for RDs in Oncology Nutrition Care.
- Reviewed and accepted: Proposal to begin SOPP for Educators.
- Reviewed and accepted: Updated Policy for Development and Approval of Quality Management and Evidence-Based Projects.
- Reviewed: Nursing Home Weight Loss Measure Tool Kit:

- Submitted: Comments to the JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals Field Review.
- Submitted: IOM definition of Healthcare Quality to the SODPF Definition of Terms Document.
- Provided: Comments to the CDR Learning Objectives as they relate to NCP and the Quality Management portion of the NCP.
- Responded to members: Regarding the “special diets” Press Ganey survey question:

- Responded to Dietetic Technicians, Registered: Regarding concerns related to lack of acknowledgement of the DTR role within SOP/SOPP documents.
- Reviewed and responded: Request from CDR for article verbiage to address what SOP/SOPPs are not intended to be used for.
- Submitted: Request to delete the portion of Key Considerations for the definition of Registered Dietitian that is in the Scope of Dietetics Practice Framework.
- Provided presentations: Committee members provided information about Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance, the Nutrition Care Process and Model and other quality management issues relating to the dietetics professional at affiliate and DPG meetings.
- PPW 2006 Quality Management Booth: Provided information about the IOM and CMS related to healthcare quality; Showed Codman Award Winner DVD; ADA staff representation.
- Health Care Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP): Initiated collaboration between ADA and HFAP to enhance the survey process as it relates to food and nutrition services.
- Ongoing participation in NCQA and JCAHO Long Term Care PTAC via staff partner and member liaisons.
- Ongoing support provided to SOP/SOPP development via staff partner.
- DCE: Published in the Journal and now formulating plan to disseminate information and incorporate into practice.
- DDPD and ON: Accepted for publication in the Journal (April and June 2006 issues respectively).
- RPG and DNS: In Process of drafting standards.
- DEP: To Begin drafting standards in April 2006.
- PNPG and MFNS: Preparing Proposals to submit to the Quality Management Committee.
- FCP and PHCNPG: Have Inquired about the possibility of initiating the Project.
