Addendum II

Additional Ideas to be Considered

ONGOING EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  1. In educational and all materials (publishing dept., knowledge center and all ADA teams), show a variety of cultural food choices in meals.
  2. Use outside expertise to provide training on effective communication with people of different cultures (ex. Poster session, Journal article)
  3. Offer a course in the history behind the kinds of food different cultures eat (possible at FNCE, in the Journal, a traveling workshop).
  4. Recommend that DPGs add a diversity/cultural issue into the program of Best Practices

ADA Website

  1. Provide information about other reliable sources with information about other cultures (Center for Disease Control, American Diabetes Association)
  2. Acknowledge different diverse months (ex.  October is American Indian month (www.diversitycalendar.com)

ADA MATERIALS

  1. Provide more information about the different cultures and foods they eat.
  2. Provide tools for members (including Facts Sheets) in languages other than English

ADA ACTIVITIES

  1. Use Networking Groups to assist with the various issues.
  2. Make sure all ethnic groups are encouraged to build networks within the Association.
  3. Ask the affiliates at the State annual meetings to consider adding one topic each year dedicated to cultural competence

RESEARCH

  1. Recommend that ADA research agenda include cultural competence

MISCELLANEOUS

  1. Benchmark cultural competence issues with other associations
  2. Encourage the Student Advisory Council to include in their plan to begin an ADA-affiliated Student Association at each accredited school which will serve as a retention model where diversity initiatives can be implemented (the American Pharmaceutical Association has implemented this)
