2008 Diversity Promotion Grant

It is the policy of the American Dietetic Association to promote, financially support, implement, monitor and update diversity/affirmative action practices and procedures in all their aspects. Guided by the principles of equal opportunity and non discrimination and a comprehensive affirmative action program, the Association seeks to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the national Association, state Affiliates, professional leadership and staff.

The American Dietetic Association has provided $5,000 annually to support minority recruitment and retention projects by dietetics education programs accredited/approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. The ADA Diversity Committee will administer the grants process and select the recipient.

Proposals should address recruitment and retention of at least one of the following underrepresented groups:

  • Black (not of Hispanic origin) — All persons having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.
  • Hispanic — All persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.
  • Asian or Pacific Islander — All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example, China, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, and Samoa.
  • American Indian or Alaskan Native — All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of North America, and who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation of community recognition.
  • Male

Eligibility Requirements

  • Institution: Sponsor of a dietetics education program accredited/approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education.
  • Project Director:  RD who is an Active member of ADA and who is employed by the accredited/approved program. Members of the Diversity Committee and the ADA Board of Directors are not eligible to apply.
  • Project Director must submit a progress report by July 9, 2009 and a final report as indicated in proposal. 
  • Project Director must agree to share results with other dietetics educators through dietetics education area meetings, ADA’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, Association newsletters, ADA Times, and/or the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. 


Requirements for Submitting Project Proposals

  1. The proposal must be for a recruitment/retention project that has not yet been started, and that will not begin until after official notification of grant award has been received from ADA.
  2. If the proposed project requires other sources of funding to support the project, these should be indicated.
  3. The proposal should include the following components: title page, abstract, objectives, demographics of area and underrepresented group(s) targeted, rationale, methods, expected outcome, short-and long-range evaluation plans, description of available resources and plan for continued funding, description of any institutional recruitment/retention program, biographical sketch of project director, budget, and timeline.
  4. The proposal should be no longer than ten (10) double spaced pages. This includes all components listed in point #3, i.e. the title page, abstract, project budget page.
  5. Original and six (6) copies of the proposal must be submitted to:

  6. The proposals will be treated as confidential, privileged communication. All copies of the proposal will be used by ADA and will not be returned to the applicant.
  7. The completed proposals must be postmarked by March 1, 2008.
  8. Applicants will be notified of selection by July 1, 2008.

Award

Projects will be funded for up to $5000. A peer review process will be used to judge the best proposal. Proposals will be scored based on the following criteria:

  1. Project merit (50%)
    • aggressive recruitment leading to an increased presence of underrepresented groups
    • academic atmosphere created that nourishes and encourages students from underrepresented groups to stay enrolled and to succeed
  2. Feasibility (20%)
  3. Capability/commitment of institution (20%)
  4. Appropriateness of budget (10%)
