Background on Revised Draft Code of Ethics

  • In Speaker Message #7 (posted on July 30, 2008), you were notified about the Fall HOD Meeting session entitled "Ethics and the Profession — The Proposed 2009 Code of Ethics."
  • This session will occur on Friday, October 24, 1:45 to 3:15 p.m.
  • The purpose of this session is to introduce the draft revised ADA/CDR Code of Ethics for the Profession of Dietetics. The session will be a mix of presentation and interactive table discussions.
  • The draft revised Code of Ethics was developed by the Code of Ethics Task Force, which is an ADA and CDR joint task force. Members of the Code of Ethics Task Force are:
    • Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, FADA, chair (ADA representative)
    • Alice Fornari, EdD, RD (ADA representative)

Documents for Review before the Fall HOD Meeting

  • In order to prepare to participate in the session, you should read the draft revised Code of Ethics. The document is accessible above for your use.
  • Reading the draft revised Code will prepare you to participate in table discussions designed to obtain your initial reactions. Please take the time to review this critically important document for the profession.

Next Steps

  • You will receive a flash drive during the Fall HOD Meeting which will contain the draft revised Code of Ethics and other related materials for use with members and credentialed practitioners.
  • You will need to encourage members and credentialed practitioners to respond to a survey soliciting input on the draft revised Code. The comment period will start on October 24, 2008 and end on January 23, 2009.
  • Member and credentialed practitioner input are critical and necessary to the process of updating the Code.
  • All input will be reviewed by the Code of Ethics Task Force during February 2009 and utilized to revise the draft Code of Ethics.
  • During March 2009, HOD will be asked to conduct an electronic dialogue and vote on the final revision. The ADA Board of Directors and the Commission on Dietetic Registration will vote to approve the final revision in April and May 2009.
  • The final Code of Ethics will be published in the August 2009 Journal of the American Dietetic Association with implementation as of January 1, 2010.
