Subject: Speaker Message #7: Fall HOD Meeting Materials

What Do You
Need to Know?

You need to know the content of the HOD Backgrounders and related materials provided for presenting the mega issues to members for input prior to the Fall HOD Meeting. All materials are now available at the beginning of this message.
What Do You
(Delegates)
Need to Do?
  • Share the HOD Backgrounders, executive summaries and fact sheets with members via web sites, electronic mailing lists or during meetings.
  • Solicit member input to the two topics for dialogue at the Fall HOD Meeting.
  • CPEs are available for both HOD Backgrounders (2 CPE at Level II offered for each).
  • Register for the HOD webinar “Overview of Nutritional Genomic” scheduled for Wednesday, September 17 at 12:00 noon (Pacific)/2:00 p.m. (Central)/3:00 p.m. (Eastern).
  • Contact 3-5 members for input on potential Mega Issues for consideration by the HOD Leadership Team.
When Do You Need to Complete It? By Thursday, October 16, 2008, post summaries of member feedback on the pre-meeting assignments to the HOD Community of Interest. Also, be sure to post your own perspectives on the issues for discussion. Use the “Discussion” section of the HOD CoI to post member input. Potential Mega Issues should be brought to the HOD Meeting.

HOD Materials Available

  • In preparation for the Fall 2008 HOD Meeting, you will find the two HOD Backgrounders and related materials for the mega issues dialogue sessions: “Nutrition Informatics” and “Nutritional Genomics.” The various materials can be found at the end of this message in the section labeled “Related Content.”
  • Members can locate these materials on the ADA Web site for members only at www.eatright.org/HODBackgroundersFall2008
  • The HOD Backgrounder on “Nutrition Informatics” consists of three separate documents:
    • HOD Fact Sheet (2 pages): this document was designed to use with members. It is intended to entice members to consider the issue and provide feedback. Please feel free to individualize the Fact Sheet by adding your own personal contact information and message.
    • Executive Summary of the HOD Backgrounder (2 pages): this summary provides a quick overview of the issues found in the complete document. This Executive Summary may be useful in working with affiliate boards or DPG executive committees.
    • Complete HOD Backgrounder (31 pages): this document was developed using the four knowledge-based strategic governance questions and provides you with the current known information on this issue. This document contains a reference list, glossary of terms and appendix.
  • The HOD Backgrounder on “Nutritional Genomics” contains three separate documents:
    • HOD Fact Sheet (2 pages)
    • Executive Summary of the HOD Backgrounder (2 pages)
    • Complete HOD Backgrounder (26 pages), which includes the appendix.
  • In addition, you will find additional materials related to “HOD Session: Identifying Future Mega Issues.” This session will require you to review the following materials:
    • “Current Mega Issues List”: This list contains the issues identified in 2006 and the mega issues addressed since 2000. As you review the list, be sure to consider whether any previous Mega Issues should be brought back to HOD for another dialogue session.
    • “Mega Issues Identification-Member Input Form”: This form should be used for collecting mega issues for consideration by the HOD Leadership Team.
    • You are encouraged to consider sharing the above two documents with 3-5 members before the Fall HOD Meeting to obtain their input for use during the session. The 3-5 members should have broad knowledge and experiences within the profession, and have the ability to think about the environment in which RDs and DTRs are working today.
    • You will bring your 3-5 potential mega issues to the session so that you can discuss them with your colleagues.

Delegate Toolkit

  • The Delegate Toolkit is provided to stimulate discussion with members at meetings or during conference calls.
  • These materials can be customized to meet your needs in working with the various members and member groups.
  • The elements of the Delegate Toolkit are found below and consist of the following items:
    • A PowerPoint presentation for use in providing an overview of the two HOD Backgrounders (“Nutrition Informatics” and “Nutritional Genomics”). This presentation contains speaker notes for presenting the slides.
    • The “Member Input Collection” form is a single tool for your use in gathering input for the pre-meeting electronic dialogue session. You can use it as a handout at a meeting or circulate electronically to obtain member input.

Continuing Feature: CPE Units Offered

  • We are pleased to offer you and other RDs and DTRs the opportunity to obtain 2 CPE units (level II CPE) for reading each of the HOD Backgrounders (“Nutritional Informatics” and “Nutritional Genomics”). Reading both HOD Backgrounders and completing the quizzes will result in 4 CPE units.
  • The learning objectives and quizzes for each of the HOD Backgrounders can be accessed using the following link on the ADA Web site: www.eatright.org/HODBackgroundersFall2008
  • At this site you will find each of the HOD Backgrounders and the accompanying quizzes. You will complete each quiz on-line and will automatically receive a Certificate of Completion for inclusion in your CDR Professional Development Portfolio.
