House of Delegates Speaker-elect/Speaker

Term

  • 2 year term (1 year as Speaker-elect, 1 year as Speaker).  This position serves on the ADA Board of Directors and the House Leadership Team.

Part I: Qualifications

  • Is a current member of the ADA in the Active classification
  • Has served at least two (2) years in the House of Delegates as an elected or appointed delegate since 2001
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities
  • Has additional experience in activities and operations of the Association, such as participation in national, DPG, MIG and affiliate and/or district dietetic associations
  • Obtains employer supports involvement and time commitment.  

Part II: Requirements

  • The HOD Speaker-Elect shall serve for one (1) year.  As HOD Speaker-elect, works closely with HOD Speaker in learning roles and responsibilities to ensure continuity and fills in as needed.  At the end of this term the HOD Speaker-Elect shall become HOD Speaker and serve for one (1) year.
  • The position also serves on the ADA Board of Directors.
  • Time.  The positions of HOD Speaker and Speaker-elect require a time commitment of approximately two (2) – three (3) months each year for meetings and travel in addition to the Food and Nutrition Conference & Expo. 
  • Overview of Meetings
    • HLT meetings: 2 times per year (June/July-Thursday-Sunday; January-Friday-Saturday); HOD meetings: 2 times per year (Fall Meeting/FNCE: September/October=Thursday-Wednesday; Spring Meeting: May=Thursday-Monday);
    • BOD meetings: 4-5 times per year (June: Tuesday-Friday; August: Saturday-Sunday; September/October: Wednesday following FNCE; February/March: Saturday-Sunday; May: following Spring HOD Meeting-Sunday-Monday). 
    • Finance & Audit Committee meeting: 1 time per year (usually spring; Sunday-Monday)
    • Issues Management Committee meeting: 1 time per year (usually in advance of Spring HOD Meeting and is usually ½ day)
    • ADA Leadership Institute: 1 time per year (Thursday-Sunday)
    • Public Policy Workshop (PPW): 1 time per year (Monday-Wednesday)
  • Overview of Conference Calls
    • HLT conducts calls every 4-6 weeks, which usually last 1½ hours;
    • Finance & Audit Committee conducts monthly calls which are usually 1-1½ hours;
    • Issues Management Committee conducts calls every 4-6 weeks, which usually last 1 hour;
    • Weekly call with Speaker and HOD Governance Team staff.
  • Additional time is required for presentations, conference calls, correspondence, planning, report writing related to the work of the Board and HOD/HLT. 
  • This position may require additional commitments of time and talent for special projects and/or task force assignments from the Board of Directors, and the House of Delegates.

Part IV: Functions

As HOD Speaker-Elect
  • Serves as a member of the HOD and the HOD Leadership Team
  • Serves as a member of the Board of Directors and its Executive Committee
  • Serves as a member of the Finance & Audit Committee
  • Serves as a member of the Issues Management Committee
  • Performs functions of the HOD Speaker in the Speaker's absence or when the Speaker is unable to perform the functions of Speaker as determined by the Board
  • Collaborates with other HLT members to facilitate the HOD Meeting dialogue sessions (1-2 dialogue sessions per HOD meeting)
  • Appoints standing committees during the Speaker-elect term to serve during the term as Speaker
  • Assists the Speaker in filling any vacancies on committees as needed
  • Serves as liaison to other groups, as requested by the ADA President
  • Facilitate communications between the BOD and HOD
  • Encourages and promotes diversity and inclusivity
  • Performs other duties as designated by the ADA President and HOD Speaker

As HOD Speaker

  • Serves as a member of the HOD and the HOD Leadership Team
  • Collaborates with other HLT members to facilitate the HOD Meeting dialogue sessions (usually 1 dialogue session per meeting)
  • Serves as a member of the Board of Directors and its Executive Committee
  • Serves as ex-officio to the Legislative and Public Policy Committee
  • Fills any vacancies on committees as needed
  • Directs functions to facilitate work of the House
  • Encourages and promotes diversity and inclusivity
  • Serves as liaison to other groups, as requested by the ADA President
  • Facilitates communications between the BOD and HOD
  • Performs other duties as designated by the ADA President
