Student Council Advisory Committee (SCAC) Report
Fall 2008
Student Council Advisory Committee (SCAC)
The ADA Student Council consists of all ADA student members and provides a means by which these members can meet, confer and promote involvement in the Association. The ADA Student Council is represented by SCAC, which is elected by members of the Student Council and governed by ADA’s Board of Directors (BOD). SCAC also fosters development of future participation and leadership in the Association at the national, affiliate and district levels.
SCAC identifies and responds to areas of concern related to student members, promotes the role of student members in nutrition and dietetics-related areas, promotes diverse membership and encourages the participation in ADA and in the Student Council.
The committee met July 17 and 18 in Chicago, and established and continue to work on the attached POW for Fiscal Year 2009. They held a teleconference on September 18, will have a face-to-face meeting at FNCE in Chicago and continue to conduct their business via teleconferences.
Program of Work
The Program of Work is listed below. The Committee developed and will attend and actively participate in the Student Council Forum on Saturday, October 25, at FNCE in Chicago. Each member will spend time at the Student Booth at FNCE and have the opportunity to talk with students in attendance. The first discussion presented by a dietetic practice group (SCAN) to help students learn more about the various opportunities in dietetics will take place the first weekend in November on the Student Community of Interest (CoI). Two more such discussions are planned. There are currently 1,830 student members on the CoI.
Each SCAC member has responsibility for identifying a Student Council Liaison (SCL) from each of the CADE approved programs in their assigned region. They are contacting program directors and student members to encourage students to fill this role at each program. As of October 6 there were 120 SCLs at the different programs. This is a large number for so early in the school year. SCAC will continue to contact individual programs to establish this position at each CADE approved program.
SCAC members also encourage the students in their region to submit articles and recipes for publication in the Student Scoop, the online student newsletter which is published five times a year. The first issue for this school year was published September 15.
SCAC is contributing a basket to the Foundation’s Silent Auction and will use their time at FNCE to recruit additional SCLs.
