Association Positions Committee (APC) Report Fall 2006

Since April 2006, the Association Positions Committee (APC) met via conference call one time in May and met face-to-face twice, once in Chicago in July and once in Hawaii in September.

During these meetings/call, the committee:

  • reviewed comments on expiring positions and recommended to the HOD Leadership Team that 8 of 8 positions be reaffirmed and updated;
  • reviewed comments on the Home Care practice paper and approved it to be updated;
  • approved revision of APC goals for 2006-2007;
  • selected ADA groups and other organizations to submit comments on 8 positions expiring in 2008;
  • volunteered for 10 workgroups for the development/update of 9 positions and 1 practice paper
  • attended presentations on the Evidence Analysis Library and Conflict of Interest by ADA staff;
  • revised selected APC policies and procedures;
  • reviewed author evaluations of the position development process;
  • finalized plans for FNCE, including the APC meeting, author/reviewer/content advisor reception and promotion of recently published positions at various FNCE sessions;
  • discussed HEN’s concerns on the Agricultural and Food Biotechnology position;
  • met with HEN representatives to discuss the concerns of the Biotechnology position and made plans for addressing those concerns;
  • oversaw the development of two Hot Topics (Avian Bird Flu and Our Food and Food Products and Trans Fats); and,
  • oversaw the development and publication of three positions (the new evidence-based position titled “Individual-, Family-, School-, and Community-Based Interventions for Pediatric Overweight” and updated “Food and Nutrition Misinformation” and “Child and Adolescent Food and Nutrition Programs”).

Ongoing activities since March 2006:

  • two new positions are in development (“Dietary Fatty Acids” and “Obesity, Reproduction and Pregnancy Outcomes”);
  • seven positions are being updated; and
  • one new practice paper is in development titled “Nutrient Density.”

A conference call is planned for November 9, 2006
