Aging

Nutrition plays multiple roles in maintaining a high quality of life as we age. As primary prevention, nutrition helps promote health and functionality and affects the quality of life in older adults. As secondary and tertiary prevention, medical nutrition therapy is an effective disease management strategy that lessens risks from chronic diseases, slows disease progression and reduces symptoms.  ADA has designated aging as a priority area for its advocacy program, supporting efforts that allow dietetic professionals to use their unique training and skills to help older adults remain independent longer, and better manage their health. With a focus on practice, progressive policies can better addresss the needs of older adults.
