Make A Difference

"Politics should be the part-time profession of every citizen"

 - - Dwight D. Eisenhower

If you are like many Americans, you may be wondering if your involvement in the political process is worth the effort: Does your phone call, letter or visit really make an impression? The answer is, without a doubt, YES! Through establishing a relationship where your representative knows YOU makes an impact!

Your elected officials and their staff in Washington, DC, and your state capital are there for you, their constituent. Remember that voters like you put them in office and it is the central focus of an elected representative's job to respond to voter concerns. So, they need to hear from you on issues you care about. If they do not hear from constituents about critical nutrition and health issues, your representative will interpret the lack of interest as a sign that the issues are not relevant to their constituents. Using the same line of thinking, the more interest they see, the more they will show their interest and support for the issue.

The ADA Government Relations Team and your state's Legislative Network Coordinator work hard to identify legislative and regulatory opportunities and challenges, build effective alliances and maintain a presence with elected ADA members. Now more than ever, the power  of "grassroots" activism is a pivotal element in our political system and the influence of local activism is expanding exponentially.
