Qualifications and Nominations for CADE Positions
According to the ADA Bylaws, the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education board has at least 12 voting members. The ADA Nominating Committee selects candidates for the chair-elect position, which is elected by the ADA membership. Following a one-year term, the chair-elect will become chair. Here are the CADE chair-elect qualifications.
The CADE board appoints the other CADE board members from a slate of qualified candidates selected by the CADE Nominating Committee following a call for nominations from program directors, ADA members, and the public. The CADE board appoints program reviewers from among applications voluntarily submitted by dietetics educators and practitioners.

CADE CHAIR-ELECT
Qualifications
- Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and member of the ADA in the Active or Retired classification.
- Hold a master’s or higher degree.
- Actively involved in dietetics education or practice.
- Show evidence of professional leadership.
- Served on the CADE board.
- Can not serve simultaneously on other groups within ADA that may represent a conflict of interest with CADE activities (i.e., elected member of the Board of Directors or Commission on Dietetic Registration).
Requirements
- The chair-elect of CADE serves a one-year term. To achieve continuity the chair-elect of CADE works closely with the chair in learning the role and responsibilities of the office. At the end of the term, the chair-elect becomes chair and serves a one-year term. At the end of the term as chair, the chair becomes the CADE delegate representative to HOD and continues on the CADE board for a one-year term.
- The position of CADE chair-elect requires a time commitment of approximately 25-30 days each year for meetings and travel. Additional time is required for conference calls, correspondence, planning, writing reports, etc. Depending on committee appointments and CADE's program of work, this time commitment may be greater. Employer support in advance is encouraged.
Nominations process
Annually, in August, the ADA Nominating Committee will solicit recommendations and select two candidates for each office on the national ballot. The election occurs in February of the subsequent year and terms of office begin June 1.
CADE PROGRAM REPRESENTATIVE-ELECT
Qualifications
- Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and member of the ADA in the Active or Retired classification.
- Hold master’s or higher degree.
- Show evidence of professional leadership.
- Actively involved in dietetics education or practice.
- Show evidence of commitment to quality dietetics education programs.
- Represent major areas of dietetics practice.
- Served as a lead program reviewer/site visitor within the last five years.
- Can not serve simultaneously on other groups within ADA that may represent a conflict of interest with CADE activities (i.e., elected member of Board of Directors or Commission on Dietetic Registration).
Requirements
- The position of program representative-elect requires a time commitment of at least 12 days for travel and attending scheduled meeting. Additional time is required to review and evaluate program materials and to complete other CADE responsibilities as assigned.
- The program representative-elect must be able to work closely with/through the CADE staff in order to promote/strengthen continuity from year to year and to facilitate communication.
- The program representative-elect serves a one-year term. At the end of the term, the program representative-elect becomes program representative and serves a two-year term. Terms of program representatives are staggered.
- Program representative responsibilities may include participation on committees and assistance with CADE activities, such as reviewer training, workshops, and forums on accreditation.
Nomination and Selection Process
The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education board will appoint program representatives-elect according to the following procedure.

Recommendations and applications for the program representative-elect positions to be filled are solicited annually via the CADE Newsletter, ADA Times and ADA Web site, as needed.

Applications include a letter of interest and current vita. Individuals who have been recommended independent of an application are contacted to determine their interest in serving in this position, and to request an application.

Applications for the program representative-elect positions are due October 15 annually. Send applications to CADE staff, ADA, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606.

The CADE Nominating Committee reviews all applications and determines those applicants who meet the qualifications and possess specialties compatible with the needs of CADE. In the nomination process, the Committee reviews site visitor evaluations, if applicable.

The CADE Nominating Committee recommends candidates qualified for appointment to each program representative-elect position to the CADE board at the winter CADE board meeting. The CADE board elects the individual for each program representative-elect position by majority vote.

The CADE Chair calls each individual elected to the program representative-elect positions to offer an appointment. If an individual accepts, the CADE Chair notifies the ADA Nominating Committee so the individual is not approached for a position on the ADA ballot that is a conflict of interest with CADE. The letter of appointment states that the individual may not have their name placed on the national ballot if the position is a conflict of interest for CADE.
CADE PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR REPRESENTATIVE
Qualifications
The program administrator representative must be a person in an administrative or similar position in higher education, health care, or other type of organization sponsoring an accredited/approved dietetics education program.
Requirements
- The position of program administrator representative requires a minimum of 12 days for travel and attending scheduled meetings. The program administrator representative must be willing and able to devote time required to review CADE materials before the scheduled meetings.
- The program administrator representative serves a three-year term. The term may be extended for an additional three years.
- Program administrator representative responsibilities may include participation on committees and assistance with CADE activities, such as reviewer training, workshops, and forums on accreditation.

- Must be a student enrolled in a CADE-accredited/approved program during the appointed term.
- Must be an ADA member.
- Demonstrated leadership in school or volunteer activities.

- The position of dietetics student representative requires a minimum of 12 days for travel and attending scheduled meetings. The dietetics student representative must be willing and able to devote the time required to review CADE materials before the scheduled meetings.
- The dietetics student representative serves a one-year term.
- Dietetics student representative responsibilities may include participation on committees and assistance with CADE activities, such as reviewer training, workshops, and forums on accreditation.

REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PUBLIC
Qualifications
- Appointment of representatives of the public is based on the U.S. Department of Education criteria for recognition of accrediting agencies.
- Representatives of the public cannot be an employee, member of the governing board, owner, or shareholder of, or consultant to, an institution or program that either is accredited/approved by CADE or has applied for accreditation.
- Representatives of the public cannot be members of ADA or any other trade association or membership organization related to, affiliated with, or associated with CADE.
- Representatives of the public cannot be a spouse, parent, child, or sibling of an individual affiliated with a program accredited/approved by CADE or a member of ADA or any other trade association or membership organization related to, affiliated with, or associated with CADE.
- Representatives of the public cannot be from the higher education community.

- The position of representative of the public requires a minimum of 12 days for travel and attending scheduled meetings. Representative of the public must be willing and able to devote time required to review CADE materials before the scheduled meetings.
- Representatives of the public serve three-year terms. The term may be extended for an additional three years. Terms of the two representatives of the public are staggered.
- Program administrator representative responsibilities may include participation on committees and assistance with CADE activities, such as reviewer training, workshops, and forums on accreditation.

- The CADE Nominating Committee recommends candidates qualified for appointment to the representative of the public position to the CADE board at the winter CADE board meeting. The CADE board elects the individual for the representative of the public position by majority vote.
PROGRAM REVIEWERS
Qualifications
- Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and member of the ADA in the Active or Retired classification.
- Hold a master’s or higher degree.
- Show evidence of professional leadership.
- Actively involved in dietetics education or practice for more than three years.
- Show evidence of commitment to quality dietetics education programs.
- Represent major areas of dietetics practice.
- Represent different geographical areas of the United States.
- Can not serve simultaneously on other groups within ADA that may represent a conflict of interest with CADE activities (i.e., elected member of Board of Directors or Commission on Dietetic Registration).
Requirements
- The program reviewer position requires travel on two weekends and at least four week days annually for two site visits. Additional time must also be committed for review team conference calls, review of written documents in preparation for a site visit, review and evaluation of five-year program assessment reports, or major change reports from education programs.
- Program reviewers must attend the next scheduled training workshop before appointment.
- Program reviewers serve three-year terms and may be reappointed for a second three-year term. If CADE’s workload requires it, program reviewers may be reappointed for additional terms.
Nomination and Selection Process
The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education board appoints an adequate number of educators and practitioners to conduct the scheduled program reviews according to the following procedure.
- Recommendations and applications for the program reviewer positions are solicited via the CADE Newsletter, the ADA Times, and ADA Web site, as needed.
- Applications for the program reviewer positions are due November 1 annually. Send applications to CADE staff, ADA, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606. Applications should include:
- letter of interest
- current resume or curriculum vita
- data form including name, address, and phone number of two individuals able to substantiate the applicant's qualifications
- The CADE Program Review/Site Visit Committee reviews all applications, interviews all qualified applicants and contacts their references.
- Following the interview process, the Committee invites qualified applicants to attend a training workshop held annually in the summer.
- The CADE Program Review/Site Visit Committee recommends candidates qualified for appointment to the program reviewer positions to the CADE board at the July CADE meeting. The CADE board appoints the individuals by majority vote.
