Obesity
The rapid rise in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among all segments of the US population is of grave concern because the health and quality of life of those afflicted plummets as health care costs and societal burdens continue to soar. Unless steps are taken to stop the rising incidence of overweight and obesity, the impact on people's lives and the cost of addressing health programs related to overweight and obesity will be catastrophic. An ADA White Paper on obesity (below) outlines five guiding principles for ADA’s work in this area. Obesity is a complex multi-factorial chronic disease state involving interactions between genetic, physiological, metabolic and environmental influences. Strategies for treatment and prevention are needed and must involve a multidisciplinary approach. The nature and depth of work required to effectively intervene on an individual or community basis will require resources beyond those routinely provided today for promoting healthy lifestyles. Both public and private initiatives are necessary to combat factors contributing to the increase in obesity rates.
