Welcome to the American Dietetic Association Web site. What Information Does ADA collect

From General Users
ADA does not collect any personal information from users browsing its Web site. Visitors to the public areas of ADA's Web site browse anonymously. Only statistical data — such as the number of hits per page — are collected. Statistical data are only used for internal and marketing purposes and do not include any personal identifying information.

From ADA Members, Conference Registrants and Other Customers
To gain access to members-only resources and personalization features on the ADA Web site, members and other users are asked to register and/or provide their member login, as well as provide some limited information. This data is submitted voluntarily. ADA asks members to provide their name, member number, business phone and e-mail. Similar information may be submitted to ADA through membership applications, conference or seminar registration, publication orders, subscriptions and contest registrations. ADA uses this information only to enhance its products and distribution of those products to its members. This information is not sold or distributed in any other manner to any other persons or entities.

E-mail
Information sent by e-mail to the American Dietetic Association is accessed only by ADA staff as necessary to complete the function requested by the Web site visitor. The servers on which information is stored are kept in a secure environment protected electronically from access by unauthorized individuals.

Use of Cookies and IP Addresses
"Cookies" are small pieces of information stored by your browser on your computer's hard drive. They provide greater security for sites which provide personalized information. Cookies are commonly used by Web sites to provide identification. The cookie you accept is uniquely yours and can be read only by the server that gave it to you. Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, but, if you prefer, you can edit your browser options to block them in the future.

A unique number called an IP address identifies every computer on the Internet. Each time you connect to the Internet your machine is assigned an IP address. An IP address is a number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent in packets across the Internet. Our site utilizes cookies but does not track IP addresses for advertising purposes.

E-commerce
Our site uses order forms for visitors to request information, products and services. We will collect visitor contact information (such as e-mail address) and method of payment. Contact information from the order form is used to process orders and to send information about our Association. User payment information that is collected is used to check the user's qualifications and bill the user for products and services. This site has a secure certificate issued by a certifying agency. The organization has verified the organizational name and that American Dietetic Association has the proof of right to use it. This site legitimately runs under the auspices of American Dietetic Association. All information sent to this site, if in an SSL session, is encrypted, protecting against disclosure to third parties.

Credit Card Account Information
ADA does not disclose credit card account information provided by its members and customers. When members and customers choose to pay using their credit cards, ADA submits the information needed to obtain payment only to the appropriate clearinghouse.

Electronic Mailing Lists and Public Forums
This site makes electronic mailing lists available to its members. You should be aware that any information you disclose on any electronic mailing list or other open forum hosted by the ADA may be collected by others and used, without authorization by ADA, to send you unsolicited non-ADA information, or for other purposes. Although ADA tries to protect your personal information when using these public forums, it cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us, and you do so at your own risk. Users also have the choice of ending any subscription by submitting a cancellation request to webmaster@eatright.org.

Surveys
Our online surveys ask respondents for contact information (such as e-mail address) and demographic information (such as zip code, age). We also may use data from our surveys to send the user information about our Association, but do not share such data with third parties.

Security
This site has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse and alteration of the information under our control.

EATRIGHT.ORG Site/Membership Registration Forms
Our site's registration forms require users to give us contact information (such as name and e-mail address), method of payment and demographic information. We use customer contact information from the registration forms to send the user information about our Association. The customer's contact information is also used by the Association to contact the visitor when necessary. Information regarding method of payment is collected for member enrollment, registration and to process orders for products and services.

External Links
EATRIGHT.ORG may contain links to other external Web sites which do not fall under the EATRIGHT.ORG domain. EATRIGHT.ORG is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such external Web sites. ADA does not endorse the content, products or services on other Web sites.

Pop-up Advertising
Some visitors have reported that advertisements for products, such as diet pills, pop up on their computer screens when they log onto ADA's Web site, www.eatright.org. ADA has nothing to do with these pop-up ads and does not sanction or control them in any way.

These ads are triggered by software on the viewer's computer that may have been unwittingly installed as part of a free software package. The most common case is with music and file sharing software that is given away free to consumers.

After installation, the software keeps track of the sites that the user logs onto and when the person goes to any site that is on a special list, an ad pops up. Advertisers pay for this and select the sites they want their ads to be associated with.

The American Dietetic Association does not approve of this practice and has written to government leaders requesting that legislation be passed to prohibit it.
