Tip of the Day
Fibromyalgia and a Healthy Weight
Television, magazines and the Internet are full of advertisements to treat fibromyalgia pain. As with other conditions, maintaining a healthy weight might also help in pain relief.
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome, more common in women, that results in body-wide pain and tenderness in the joints, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. Fibromyalgia has also been linked to fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, depression and anxiety.
While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, maintaining a healthy weight may help keep the pain under control by putting less pressure on the muscles and tissues around your joints. Relieving stress, staying physically active and avoiding caffeine six to eight hours before sleep also helps.
Contact your health-care provider if you believe you suffer from fibromyalgia and consult a registered dietitian nutritionist in your area. Visit the Your Health and Your Weight section for information on maintaining a healthy weight.
