Are you among the many adults responsible for raising children while also caring for aging parents? If so, you’re among the generation commonly referred to as the “sandwich generation.”

Being responsible for the various nutritional needs of different family members while maintaining schedules, from after school sporting events to doctor appointments, can be overwhelming. Keep you and your family balanced:

  • First and foremost, take care of you. Eat smart, try to schedule regular physical activity and stay rested.
  • Consult a registered dietitian. A registered dietitian will work with you to develop an eating plan to meet the nutritional needs of everyone in your family.
  • Plan shopping, food preparation, mealtime cleanup, eating schedules and family meals. This will help divide some of the responsibility and keep eating together a priority even with busy schedules.
  • Recruit a support network that may include home-delivered meals occasionally.

For more information on the nutritional needs of your entire family, consult a registered dietitian in your area and visit our Healthy Aging section and kidseatright.org.
