Holiday Party Survival Guide
The theme of the season is “Eat, Drink and Be Merry.” Review these tips to survive your holiday parties with more "Be Merry" and less "Eat and Drink."
- Check out the entire buffet and make a plan of what you'd like to try before loading your plate with foods you may not even really want.
- Start by filling a plate with veggies and salad before going for the entrees and desserts. Research shows eating a salad before your meal can help you eat fewer calories overall.
- Use smaller plates. The less you put on your plate the less you can eat, smaller plates will help.
- Be mindful of all the handfuls of snacks and little tastes here and there you eat between meals and during the appetizer time of the party. Those calories count, too.
- After you eat, sit or stand as far away from the buffet table as you can. The closer you are to the food table the more tempting it is to eat "just one more."
- Eat slowly and savor every bite. Try putting your fork down after each mouthful until you are ready for the next one.
- Before you go back for seconds, wait 10 minutes and then ask yourself if you're still hungry. If you are, go ahead.
- Remember what you drink adds calories, too. Consider having a low-calorie drink or water in between eggnogs, ciders, hot toddies and other festive drinks.
- Serve yourself rather than let someone else do it. That way you are in control of your portion sizes.
- Choose your splurges wisely. If you decide to forgo moderation on a treat or dish you really have to have, cut calories elsewhere or add extra physical activity to your day.
- If you're hosting, send leftovers home with your guests.
With a little planning and mindfulness of what you’re eating you can still "Eat, Drink and Be Merry."
