Keeping an Eye on Diabetes

November is Diabetic Eye Disease Month, shining a light on the fact that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness.

People with diabetes are at greater risk for glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to blood vessels of the retina and if left untreated can lead to blindness. There are often no symptoms of diabetic retinopathy until the damage to your eyes is severe.

Those living with diabetes should ensure the health of their eyes with regular eye exams and work with a registered dietitian to keep their blood sugar levels under control.

For more information about managing your diabetes, consult a registered dietitian in your area and visit our Disease Management and Prevention section.
