Tip of the Day
Happy Halloween
Today is Halloween and children everywhere are smiling ear to ear. Meanwhile, just out of sight, their parents are cringing at the thought of the year's worth of candy suddenly in young hands. Talk to your kids before they leave for trick-or-treating to set some ground rules regarding how and when the candy will be enjoyed.
Halloween is a great time to reiterate the importance of moderation to your child. Explain that you're going to spread the candy out over a period of time and discuss beforehand when and how much candy your child will enjoy in a day. This agreed upon "treat schedule" will make the days after Halloween easier for everyone.
When your child gets home and wants to show off his bounty, have him or her make piles of favorites and not-so-favorites. Agree that the not-so-favorite pile can be donated to a local shelter, put in the candy bowl at your house for later trick-or-treaters or even sent in a care package to those serving overseas.
