Tip of the Day
Pump Up the Iron
Iron serves as an essential part of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in your blood from your lungs to every cell in your body, and other enzymes. If you don't consume enough iron, the stores in your body can get too low and red blood cells can't carry as much oxygen, making you feel tired and weak. Iron deficiency is more common among women of childbearing age and adolescent girls.
To pump up the iron in your meals, try the following pairings:
- Sirloin strips with spinach salad
- Ham with scrambled eggs
- Grapefruit with bran cereal
- Papaya with whole wheat toast
- Orange with peanut butter sandwich on whole-wheat bread
To ensure you're including the iron you need in your eating plan, consult a registered dietitian.
