The Perks of Breast-feeding for Mom and Baby
This week is World Breast-feeding Week, a great opportunity to learn about the benefits of breast-feeding for both infants and mothers.
Medical and nutrition experts recommend breast-feeding for your baby's optimal growth and development, but are you aware of the benefits for mom? Besides knowing her baby is well-nourished, a nursing mother obtains several benefits from breast-feeding:
- Breast milk doesn't need preparation: Measuring, mixing or warming is not required.
- Breast-feeding may help regain your pre-baby figure. Some studies have shown that breast-feeding women experience greater postpartum weight loss than those who did not breast-feed.
- Nursing your baby provides you with an opportunity to relax every few hours.
- Breast-feeding may lower the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer, Type 2 diabetes and postpartum depression.
While breast-feeding isn't always possible for every mother and baby, the potential benefits make it worth discussing with your physician and a registered dietitian.
