Tip of the Day
Practice Physical Activity at Any Age
Today marks the 19th annual Senior Health and Fitness Day and this year's theme is "Get Moving… Start Improving!" The goal for this day is to motivate older Americans to be physically active to stay healthy and fit.
Without overdoing it, there are plenty of activities that older Americans can take part in without risking hurting themselves. Here are some ideas:
- Walk around the block or around the mall. Invite a friend for companionship, motivation and fun!
- Do some gardening.
- Try water exercises at your local health club.
- Keep your arms strong by lifting one- to five-pound weights. You can use household items such as cans of fruit or vegetables.
- Include stretching in your daily routine when you wake up in the morning.
If it has been a while since you've been physically active, talk to your physician before jumping into regular physical activity and work together to plan activities that are right for you. For more information, consult a registered dietitian in your area and visit our Health Aging section.
