The Month of Blooming Is (Appropriately!) Allergy Awareness Month

May is Allergy Awareness Month, and while trees may be in bloom and pollen is in the air, it is also important to be aware of food allergies. If you or your loved ones suffer from food allergies, it is important to be aware and accommodate them to keep them healthy. Allergy Awareness Month is a great time to better understand food allergies and intolerances.

Once your allergist has tested and confirmed food allergies, you need to be diligent about avoiding these allergens. Here are some tips:

  • Read food labels for potential problems. If you don't know what an ingredient is, call the manufacturer for details.
  • Educate family and friends about allergies. Some people don't know how serious food allergies can be and may not understand even tiny amounts of a food can be a problem.
  • Consult a registered dietitian. An RD will work with you or your family member to develop a healthful eating pattern while avoiding allergens.
